Raccoon rescue

The OHS Rescue and Investigations Services (RIS) group receives many calls about wildlife in distress, but on September 12, an agent was dispatched to a precarious situation.

A raccoon had  fallen down a 20-foot storm sewer as a result of having a plastic peanut butter jar stuck on its head.

An OHS RIS agent responded to a call from a Multi Drain Inc. worker who discovered the raccoon while working on sewers in the area.  One of the crew members volunteered to go down into the sewer to assist with the rescue, following some quick lessons on how to use a dog pole.

When the raccoon was out, the RIS agent transported it to a nearby woods and spent the next 15 minutes removing the plastic jar.  After much twisting and pulling, the confused critter was freed and back where he belongs.
